Hong Kong residents, including foreign domestic helpers, born in 1955 or 1956 should have their HK identity cards (HKIC) replaced starting later this month until mid November, the Immigration Department (ImmD) said.

The ImmD said those born in 1955 and 1956 can have their HKICs replaced at the different Smart Identity Card Replacement Centres (SIDCC) starting on September 24 until November 15.

“Eligible applicants can now make appointment for replacement of smart identity cards,” the ImmD said.

The members of the current batch—those born in 1964 or 1965—have until September 23 to have their old identity cards replaced.

Those born in 1957 to 1963 are expected to get their turn between November 2019 to June 2020; 1970-1976 (2020); 1977-1982 (2020 to 2021); 1983-1984, 2005-2007, 2012-2018 (2021); 1987-1992 (2021 to 2022); and those born before and in 1954, and 1993-2000 (2022).

“Failure to apply to apply for a new identity card within the specified called-up periods without reasonable excuse is an offense. Offenders may be prosecuted and are liable to a fine of $5,000,” the ImmD said.

Applicants can personally apply at the different SIDCCs which will be open from Mondays to Saturdays, from 8am to 10pm (except public holidays).

The territory-wide Identity Card Replacement Exercise covers all Hong Kong residents, who should apply for new smart identity cards in person at SIDCCs during their specified periods, whether they are permanent residents or non-permanent residents taking up employment, investment, residence or study in Hong Kong.

Employers of foreign domestic helpers should also arrange for their helpers to apply for the new identity cards during the latter’s specified periods, the ImmD said.

Eligible applicants may make appointment bookings via the Internet (www.gov.hk/newicbooking), the ImmD mobile application, or the 24-hour telephone booking hotline 2121 1234.

If eligible Hong Kong residents are absent from Hong Kong during their call-up period, they can apply within 30 days of their return to Hong Kong.
