Hong Kong health authorities have recorded no imported cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Friday, breaking a three-week streak of daily infections among inbound travelers.

Two men, aged 40 and 50, were the only cases in the city confirmed by the Centre for Health Protection. They were close contacts of previously confirmed cases.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health said the two men were already in quarantine and were sent to hospitals for treatment early Friday morning.

The last time no imported cases were reported was on September 5.

Authorities have beefed up measures to reduce the number of imported cases. Yesterday, the Government gazetted amendments to existing border control measures to include the United Kingdom as one of the high-risk places starting Oct. 1.

People from these places must be able to produce a negative COVID-19 test result 72 hours before they arrive in the city, as well as proof of quarantine accommodation.

The previous weekend saw a surge in imported cases, after 19 of 23 cases of coronavirus tallied last Sunday had a history of overseas travel.
