Overseas Filipino workers in Hong Kong should be wary of online posts asking for donations, a Philippine Consulate General (PCG) official said today (March 26).

The official, who asked for anonymity, issued the warning after a Facebook post reporting that a Filipino domestic worker had died went viral. The post identified an account where donations could be deposited.

“Nakausap ko mismo yung binabanggit dun sa post at buhay pa siya. So, walang katotohanan yan,” the PCG official said.

“Nakausap ko yung tao pati yung employer niya,” he added.

The official said he even talked to the domestic worker’s father in the Philippines who had become concerned about his daughter’s health due to the post.

“Pati yung tatay niya sa Pilipinas na naging concerned dahil sa post nakausap ko rin. So, kalokohan po yan,” he added.

The official warned that OFWs who post fake information and then ask and receive “donations” can be charged with “deception” under Hong Kong’s Theft ordinance.
