14 persons arrested in anti-illegal worker operations
The Sham Shui Po Police District, together with the Immigration Department, launched an inter-departmental operation against illegal immigrants and illegal workers on Monday (November 21) under the code name “CHAMPION”, after a thorough investigation.
During the operation, officers arrested 14 people, including seven local men, two local women, and five foreign women, aged between 21 and 65, suspected of “breach of conditions of stay”, “overstaying” and “not carrying identity documents when going out”, etc. Four of the local men were also found to be wanted persons.
The police said that under the Immigration Ordinance, Cap 115, any person who contravenes a condition of stay valid for him commits an offense and is liable on conviction to a fine of $50,000 and to imprisonment for two years. All visitors are prohibited from taking up any employment, whether paid or unpaid, without the approval of the Director of Immigration. Offenders are subject to prosecution, with a maximum fine of $50,000 and two years imprisonment upon conviction, and aiding and abetting.
