Hong Kong sees 17 new Covid-19 cases, with 15 in cargo vessel from Indonesia
Health authorities confirmed 17 new Covid-19 infections on Friday, with 15 of these cases involving crew members of a cargo vessel from Indonesia.
The vessel, which had 23 crew members, arrived in Hong Kong on Tuesday. The 15 infected personnel all carried the L452R mutant strain of the coronavirus, according to the Centre for Health Protection.
For prudence, the CHP said the eight other crew members will have to undergo quarantine in the vessel and get tested.
Authorities will also investigate the vessel operator, who is suspected of providing false information to the Health Department during the application to enter Hong Kong ports.
“The DH is carrying out investigation and will seek legal advice from the Department of Justice for the suspected contravention of the Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation (Cap. 599A) by the vessel’s operator,” the statement said.
Hong Kong also imported two Covid-19 cases from Lithuania and Azerbaijan. The arrival from Lithuania, a 43-year-old woman, was found carrying the L452R strain even though she was fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in the city.
Meanwhile, Block A of Sunlight Court in Pok Fu Lam and the 28th floor of the C-Bons International Center in Kwun Tong will be issued compulsory testing notices.
A woman aged 59 who lived and worked in those places respectively had tested positive for Covid-19 in the United Kingdom, five days after she departed Hong Kong.
The city has recorded 12,094 confirmed cases to date.
