Cross-boundary ferry services between Hong Kong and Macao resumes Jan. 8

The Hong Kong Government announced yesterday, January 5, upon liaison and collaboration with the Macao SAR Government, that the cross-boundary ferry services between Hong Kong and Macao will be resumed gradually starting January 8 to further foster cross-boundary people flow.

Beginning January 8, cross-boundary ferry services between Hong Kong and Macao via Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal will be resumed gradually with about 10 trips per day.

In preparation for the resumption of cross-boundary ferry services, the Marine Department has inspected and tested the terminal equipment as well as worked actively with ferry companies to complete ship surveys, trial runs, berthing trials and drills involving relevant Government departments in order to ensure smooth operation upon service resumption.

With regards to land transport, the existing cross-boundary bus services plying between Hong Kong and Macao will continue to be strengthened subject to needs.

The existing testing requirement on all inbound persons from Macao will remain largely unchanged. All inbound persons aged 3 or above on the date of arrival at Hong Kong will be required to conduct a rapid antigen test within 24 hours, or undergo a polymerase chain reaction-based nucleic acid test (PCR test) within 48 hours, prior to the scheduled time of arrival in Hong Kong, and obtain a negative result for entering Hong Kong.

That said, if they have stayed in the Mainland on the day of, or in the seven days prior to, arrival at Hong Kong, they will be required to undergo a PCR test within 48 hours prior to the scheduled time of arrival at Hong Kong, and obtain a negative result for entering Hong Kong.

Meanwhile for those inbound travelers to Macao, the Health Bureau of Macao announced yesterday, January 5, on the requirements of proof of COVID-19 , with effect on 8 January 2023, that individuals entering the Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao-SAR):

  • Those intending to enter the Macao-SAR from countries and regions outside China must present a proof of negative antigen test or nucleic acid test for COVID-19 taken 48 hours upon boarding Macau bond flight or vessel.(The antigen or nucleic acid test is valid on the day of sampling and the following two days; both self-testing and laboratory antigen are accepted, the test result should be declared through the Rapid Antigen Test Reporting platform of the Health Bureau and presented via this platform or the Macao health code).
  • Those entering the Macao-SAR from Mainland China, the HK-SAR or the region of Taiwan are not required to present any proof of COVID-19 testing.
