A retired British doctor accused of indecent assault on his Filipino domestic helper was back in court on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts.

Brian Drew Apthorp, 84, stood for retrial of two cases of sexual assault on his helper between September 2018 and April 2019.

Last year, he was found guilty at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts and was sentenced to jail for up to 30 months.  But he was able to overturn his conviction and his sentencing of the same charges by the High Court on April 29, 2021.

Apthorp was back in court on Tuesday for three counts of indecent assault. He denied all charges at the beginning of the proceedings.

The helper referred to as “X,” was also present.

The incidents all happened at Apthorp’s residence on Shouson Hill Road.

According to X, the first time it happened was on Sept. 11, 2018. Apthorp had told her he was giving a medical examination.

The other incidents happened between November 2018 and December 2018, and on April 4, 2019.

When the first indecent assault happened, Apthorp had requested her to come to his study. She was told to close the door.

He asked her if she felt any physical discomfort to which he said to her, “Trust me, I’m a doctor.”

X was asked to lie down but she didn’t do so and only sat at the edge of the bed.
