Hong Kong SAR, China - April, 19 2015: Foreign workers gathering around the street of Central District on Sunday. Most of the work are Filipino and Indonesian.

Hong Kong residents wanting to apply for their smart identity are advised to make an appointment before coming to the Registration of Persons Offices (ROP), starting Feb. 1

The appointment booking period for the identity card is 24 working days.
For any changes to their appointment, the earliest time is the following working day (Monday-Saturday, except general holidays).
But the result of the booking is subject to the availability of the quota for each office.
This is due to the recent influx of residents that have approached the ROPs and Smart Identity Card Replacement Centres (SIDCCs) for their identity card services without making any appointments.
The Immigration Department (ImmD) reminds residents to make their appointments to ensure it’s smooth and orderly.

Applicants should bring with them the appropriate documents. Without any appointments, applications will not proceed.

If an applicant urgently needs to replace their identity cards due to lost, damaged, destroyed or defaced, then the ROP Offices in these circumstances can offer them assistance even without any appointments.
Residents can make an appointment by mobile application (https://www.immd.gov.hk/eng/mobile/index.html), the Internet or the 24-hour telephone booking hotlines (2598 0888).

Applicants should pre-fill their application forms when making their appointments through their mobile application or the Internet for faster procedure.

If a resident is unable to replace their identity cards because of their absence in Hong Kong, they can apply for a replacement within 30 days upon their return to the city.
They do not need to rush to replace their identity card.

Those who only stay in Hong Kong for less than 30 days will not break any laws for failing to apply for the replacement of their identity cards during that period.
