Police Authorities reported a 7-year-old girl got choked while eating a jelly during a classroom break at Chiu Sheung School in Pok Fu Lam Road on Oct. 20.

The girl named Zairalaine Shaikh, was identified to have a Filipina-Indian descent and is currently in ICU at Queen Mary Hospital, fighting for her life.

In a police report, the girl collapsed and was unconscious when the ambulance arrived. She was sent immediately to Queen Mary Hospital and regained her consciousness.

Elena Leones Siobal, 42-year-old Filipino mother of Shaikh, said she learned that there was no teacher around and only her daughter’s classmates was in the room when the accident happened.

She wanted to know from the school why there was no teacher in the classroom during break time.

Siobal and her husband have a hard time accepting their daughter’s situation especially during the pandemic. She said even their visit to their daughter at the hospital was limited because of the present hospital protocols.

Dr. Mike Manio said in emergency case like in Choking, first step is to check for airway obstruction by checking on the patient’s mouth and calling for help. While waiting for the medical responders try performing first aid, do Abdominal thrust – place your arms around their waist and bend them forward. Clench one fist and place it right above their belly button. Put the other hand on top of your fist and pull sharply inwards and upwards. Repeat this movement up to 5 times.

“Give up to five back blows: hit them firmly on their back between the shoulder blades. … Back blows create a strong vibration and pressure in the airway, which is often enough to dislodge the blockage. Dislodging the blockage will allow them to breathe again.”Dr Manio added.

Siobal, from Abra in the Philippines, is now asking for prayers for her daughter who is now still fighting for her life. She is praying that her daughter wakes up again.
