A thousand and one ways to love Palawan

HOW do I love Palawan? Let me count the ways.

First, Palawan is a gem of an island for all its pristine beaches that are scattered in different parts of the island and for its long-winding lagoons which stretche for miles leaving one overwhelmed with wonder.

Located in the northernmost part of Palawan is Busuanga Island. It is the largest island of Calamian Group in the province of Palawan. Portions of the island are protected by
the Tagbanwa tribe–one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Philippines. To further strengthen their hold on the island, the Tagbanwas were awarded a certificae of Ancestral Domain (ACDT). They are tasked to manage the area and preserve its marine and land resources.DSC05723

Every turn of the boat will lead you to another adventure. The coral reefs in Coron showcase the finest reefs in the Philippine archipelago. Imagine staring at unblemished garden of corals immaculately preserved in crystal-clear blue waters.

You won’t mind the 10-minute climb to see Kayangan Lake. It is nestled atop a mountain where steady waters await the eager adventurer to view the majestic stalactites–icicle-shaped formation that hangs from the ceiling of a cave.

It forms a column on the floor called stalagmites. If you’re an able swimmer, you can do away with your life vest and swim to touch the rock formations. A lookback on the dreary days of World War II is forever etched on one side of Palawan. On Sept. 24, 1944, the
US Navy bombed a Japanese convoy at anchor in Coron, Palawan.

The Irako shipwreck is said to be one of the biggest ships sunk in the bombing but it is now home to a variety of fishes. The wreck can be seen through snorkeling or diving. One can see the outline of a once massive ship with just a look into the waters. Most divers who are in
search of history are in for a treat in this tourist attraction. Siete pecados or seven sins is a group of islands which is home to an abundance of marine life. Legend has it the
seven sisters went swimming against their mother’s will and they ended up drowning. In each spot where they drowned, islets formed to mark their graves. Today, Siete pecados is home to a spectacular collection of fishes and reefs.DSC056733

These are only a few of the notable tourist attractions in Coron. It will take at least a week to see all the top attractions. But be prepared to get a tan because of the scorching heat in the island. But a quick dip in the cool waters will make you forget about the sun. Food
consists of fresh seafood all day. And each bite taste like it’s the best catch of the day.
And when it’s time to leave the island,  a certain emptiness will creep inside. You can’t simply forget something so beautiful.
