The Hong Kong Observatory raised Typhoon Signal Number 3 (T3) over the city this morning due to an approaching tropical storm.

The Observatory said Tropical Storm Bebinca was estimated to be around 170 kilometers south-southwest of Hong Kong at 8 a. m. today and was expected to “move slowly northward, edging closer to the Pearl River Delta region.”

“The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force. This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected,” the Observatory said.

It added that the chance of Gales or Storm Signal No. 8 being raised over Hong Kong before 2 p.m. was “not high.”

“Bebinca is forecast to edge closer to the Pearl River Delta region later today. Its associated rain bands will bring squally showers to the territory,” the Observatory said.

“The public should stay on the alert and take note of the latest weather situation,” it added.

Before T3 was raised this morning, Hong Kong had been under Typhoon Signal Number 1 since Thursday (August 9), the longest period in more than 11 years.
