A Filipino domestic worker is in critical condition after she tried to kill herself in Sheung Shui on Wednesday morning, a consulate official said this afternoon.

The official said Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) officers visited the Filipina at the North District hospital earlier today (August 3) but she was still in a coma at the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

“She’s in critical condition. She drank insecticide besides hanging herself,” the official said.

“The doctors said there were signs of organ failure,” she added.

The official said the 32-year-old Filipino woman apparently tried to kill herself due to problems over “financing” or loans.

A Hong Kong Police spokesman earlier said that worker hanged herself inside the toilet of her employer’s home in Sheung Shui but her 39-year-old male employer found her in time.

The police said the incident happened at around 8:11 a.m. on Wednesday. According to local media reports, the worker’s employer was calling for the worker but got no reply inside his luxury villa at The Green along Fan Kam Road, Sheung Shui, New Territories.

When he checked the toilet, he discovered that the domestic worker had hanged herself using “some electric cable,” the police spokesman said.

“He brought her down and she was taken to the North District Hospital for medical treatment. There was no suicide note found,” the spokesperson said.

In the first half of 2016, Philippine Consulate General officials expressed alarm after four Filipino domestic workers killed themselves due to mounting debts.
